Heidi Klum, who is known as the “Queen of Halloween”, arrived at her 25th annual party in New York dressed as a giant, bloody severed hand, modelled on her own left hand. The costume reportedly took five to six hours to get into.

In Perth, where Halloween costumes are typically made in the 20 minutes before leaving the house, the reaction was a mixture of admiration and resentment.

“I went as a ghost,” said a Scone man. “It was a sheet. It took four minutes, and two of those were finding the scissors. I thought I’d done well. Then I see a woman dressed as a hand and I feel like I’ve let my family down.”

A Letham dad who wore a black bin bag and said he was “a bin bag” said the comparison was unfair. “She’s got a team,” he said. “I’ve got a roll of bin bags and a wife who said, ‘Is that it?'”

Perth costume shops say they expect demand for giant hands next year. “We’ve ordered one in,” said one. “It’s a big foam hand. It says ‘Number One’ on it. It’ll do.”

Klum is said to be already planning next year’s outfit. Perth says it is already planning to go as a ghost again.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. My husband went as ‘a man who’s just been told the price of a Christmas tree’. Same face he always has, but people loved it.

  2. A giant hand. I’d have just gone as a giant sausage roll, given this week.
