G20 Cancels Its ‘Family Photo’ After a Row; Perth Families Say That’s Just Every Christmas Since 1994

World leaders scrap the traditional group shot. Perthshire households say the annual family photo has always been a diplomatic incident.

The G20 has cancelled its traditional “family photo” of world leaders after disagreements among members, and Perth families say they understand completely.

“Every Christmas we try to get one photo,” said a mum from Scone. “Somebody’s in a mood, somebody’s eyes are shut, Uncle Derek won’t stand next to Auntie Pat, and the dog walks off. That’s not a G20 summit. That’s Boxing Day.”

Perth photographers say group shots are always difficult. “You need everyone looking the same way,” said one. “With world leaders, that’s hard. With a Perthshire family at a wedding, it’s impossible. Someone’s always at the bar.”

Experts say the photo is supposed to show unity. A Craigie gran said the last photo of her family showing unity was taken in 1987, “and that’s only because they were all watching the same horse”.

The G20 says it will continue its talks. Perth families say they will continue to try for a photo this Christmas, “but we’re not hopeful”.
