A $6.3bn hack on the cryptocurrency exchange Binance has been linked to North Korea, and a Perth grandmother says it proves she was right all along.

“I keep my money in a shortbread tin,” she said. “Behind the porridge. It’s never been hacked. It’s never had a password. The only security breach was my grandson in 2017, and he paid it back in Kit Kats.”

Financial experts say crypto is complicated. The gran says that is the problem. “If you can’t put it in a tin, I don’t trust it,” she said. “Bitcoin? Where’s the coin? Show me the coin.”

Banking experts in Perth say there are better places for savings than a biscuit tin. “Interest rates, protection, that sort of thing,” said one. The gran says the tin does offer a return: “Every time I open it, there’s a biscuit.”

Investigators continue to look into the hack. The shortbread tin remains secure, behind the porridge, with its lid jammed on very tight.
