PERTH — Perth City Hall’s steps were piled high with broken umbrellas on Tuesday after the council launched an amnesty for “umbrellas that died in the line of duty.”

Many had been turned inside out by the wind off the Tay so many times that their owners said they had “simply stopped going back the right way.” One umbrella, handed in by a Scone man, was missing all its fabric and was “basically a metal spider.”

“I’ve been holding it over my head for three years,” he admitted. “Out of habit. It was emotional support, really.”

The council says the umbrellas will be recycled into something useful, such as more temporary traffic lights.
