PERTH — Drivers diverted from Friarton Road by the harbour floodgates have praised the closure as “refreshingly transparent”.

“Usually a road’s shut and you never see anyone working,” said fictional van driver Gordon Smart. “This time there’s a giant gate and a river behind it. I get it. I respect it.”

The council aimed to reopen the gates on Monday morning. The river has been told to wait.
