They Took Away May Day. What’s Next — the Tattie Holidays? The Second of January?
A parent warns: 'Today it's a Monday in May. Tomorrow it's Hogmanay.'

I support the February holiday in 2028. February is the bleakest month and anything that gets the family out of the house is welcome, even if we only get as far as a supermarket café.
But I cannot stay silent about May Day.
May Day was the one holiday nobody understood. We didn’t dance round maypoles. We just had a Monday off, in May, for reasons lost to history. That’s what made it beautiful — a holiday purely for its own sake, like a cake on a Tuesday.
And they’ve taken the lunchtime finish before Christmas! The sacred half-day, when children are released at noon full of tinsel and despair.
I’m told it makes the calendar more consistent. I don’t want consistency. I’m Scottish. I want a confusing calendar of odd days off that I have to explain to people from England. Mark my words: one day they’ll come for the second of January. I’ll be ready. In my dressing gown.
