Letham Celebrates Apple Day by Giving Away 3,000 Apples Nobody Wanted From Their Gardens

Neighbours finally rid of windfalls; 'best day of the year', says man with a wheelbarrow.

LETHAM — Residents marked Apple Day this week with a street swap, which quickly became a street “please just take these”.

“Every October it’s the same,” said a retired teacher. “The tree produces 400 apples. I eat three. The rest go in a bag on the wall with a sign saying ‘free’. Nobody takes them because they’ve all got a tree too.”

Thursday’s swap saw an estimated 3,000 apples change hands, mainly back and forth across the same street, ending roughly where they began. “It’s not about the apples,” said one organiser. “It’s about the community. And the apples.”
