High Pressure Settles In for Bonfire Week, Bringing Fog, Frost and the Annual Question: ‘Was That a Firework or Did a Bin Fall Over?’

Mostly dry, cloudy days of around 11°C, with chilly nights. Fog is likely, so fireworks may be 'heard rather than seen'.

High pressure is expected to dominate next week, meaning mostly dry weather, highs of around 11°C, frosty nights and the chance of fog in the mornings.

For Bonfire Night, the Met Office’s longer-range outlook suggests calm conditions, which experts say could mean thick fog for some displays. “If it’s foggy, you won’t see the fireworks,” said one Perth weather fan. “You’ll just hear them. It’s like listening to your neighbour moving a wardrobe.”

Residents say the week ahead will also bring the usual confusion. “Every night from now until Christmas, there’ll be a bang somewhere,” said a Craigie man. “You never know if it’s a rocket, a car door or the bin lorry. I’ve stopped turning round.”

Pet owners are reminded to plan for the bangs. Dog walkers say they will be out early, in the fog, “walking into lamp posts with dignity”.

Weather experts say things may turn more unsettled later in November. For now, the forecast is calm, grey and as quiet as next week’s fireworks will allow.

  1. Every bang is the bin lorry until proven otherwise. That’s my rule.

  2. Last year’s display was so foggy I watched it on someone’s phone who was standing next to me.
