Wilma Rattray of Pitlochry has kept a pound coin in a wee purse in her kitchen drawer since 1987, labelled in biro: “FOR THE TOWN HALL”.

“I always thought it might come up,” said Wilma, 81. “You never know with halls. And now it has! For a pound! I could have had it. But it’s going to the community, which is me, so I’ve basically got it anyway.”

The coin — an old round one she calls “the shiny one” — is no longer legal tender, which Wilma describes as “a technicality, dear”.

She plans to put it in the new hall’s fundraising jar “for luck”, and is first in the queue for the ceilidh.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. That pound coin has been to more coffee mornings than the minister.

  2. Wilma should buy the town hall. She’d still have change, apparently.
