US voters go to the polls on Tuesday in the midterm elections, and candidates across the country are reported to be ditching ties and suits to look more relatable.

Perth’s fashion experts say that is only a start. “Losing the tie is good,” said a Perth tailor. “But if you really want to look like a normal person, you need a fleece with a logo from a company that no longer exists, a bag for life with a bit of a hole in it, and a hat you got free at a garden centre.”

A Scone woman said American politicians should also learn to stand in the rain. “If you want Perth votes, you stand outside Tesco in November with a clipboard and no umbrella,” she said. “That’s how you show commitment. Anybody can look relaxed when it’s sunny.”

American voters will choose members of Congress, along with some governors and local officials. In Perth, the main election this week is whether the office will have a Christmas party or “a nice lunch”.

The Perthetic wishes American voters a peaceful election day, and reminds them that a fleece is suitable for all occasions.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. If they want to look like real voters they need to wear a fleece with a hole in the elbow and a dog-hair stripe down the front.

  2. Nothing says ‘ordinary voter’ like a man in a $400 shirt with the top button undone.
