London has opened an exhibition styled as an Italian restaurant in which all the food is knitted — woolly spaghetti, crocheted pizzas, purl-stitch tiramisu — and the art world is enchanted.

Perth’s knitting circles are less impressed. “Knitted food? Our group knitted a full Burns Supper in 2017,” said a member of a Scone circle. “Haggis, neeps, tatties. The whisky was a tricky one, but we did it in amber mohair.”

Another member has been knitting a Perth bakery window for nearly two years, including a woollen bridie, a crocheted steak pie and what she calls “a very convincing empire biscuit”.

The circle is now planning its own exhibition, provisionally called “Knit Perth”, featuring a knitted fish supper and a full-size woollen Friarton Bridge, “with roadworks”.

Visitors to the London show have been warned not to try eating the exhibits. Perth’s circle says the same warning applies to its own creations, as several grandchildren have learned.
