Yellow Wind Warning Issued for the South of England Only; Perthshire Feels ‘Overlooked, Frankly’

Locals who have endured 'a hundred unnamed gales' demand their own warning, 'even a wee one'.

DUNKELD — The Met Office’s decision to issue a yellow wind warning for parts of southern England and Wales at the end of the week, with gusts of up to 70mph possible on exposed coasts, has left Perthshire residents feeling “quite hurt, actually.”

“We get wind like that every second Tuesday and nobody gives us a warning,” said one Birnam man, gripping a lamppost out of habit. “Down south, a bit of a breeze and suddenly it’s yellow warnings and a chap on the telly in a big coat. Up here you just lose a wheelie bin and phone your cousin in Stanley to see if it’s landed.”

The Met Office says a deep area of low pressure could bring strong winds and heavy rain at the end of the week, with Tayside also “turning rather wet and windy through Friday.”

Perthshire’s unofficial weather committee has drawn up its own warning scale: “Breezy”, “Hold Onto Your Bunnet”, “Bring the Trampoline In”, and “Kinross Has Moved.” Friday is currently expected to reach level two.

“We don’t want sympathy,” said the Birnam man. “We just want recognition. A small yellow triangle. It could say: ‘Perthshire — windy, as usual.’ We’d frame it.”
