Perth is in for a calm, mostly dry Monday, with sunny intervals and a top temperature of about 11°C, according to the Met Office. The wind will barely bother itself, at around 2mph, with gusts of perhaps 9mph if it feels energetic.

This is lovely weather for a walk. It is terrible weather for a washing line.

“Two miles an hour,” said a Letham woman, looking at her sheets. “That’s not wind. That’s a sigh. My sheets have been hanging there since half seven and they’ve not moved. I think they’re waiting for me to go back in so they can have a lie down.”

A Tulloch man said he had pegged out four shirts and they “looked like they’d been painted on”.

Meteorologists point out that clothes will still dry slowly in the sunshine. Perth households point out that the sun goes down at 4:29pm, and that after that, the washing just hangs there feeling damp and judging you.

The Perthetic recommends hanging the washing out anyway, as an act of faith, and bringing it in at four o’clock, still slightly damp, to finish on the radiator, as Scotland intended.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. Put a full load out at nine. At two o’clock it was exactly as wet as I left it, and a bit colder. Hung it on the radiators. Back to square one.

  2. Not a breath. The flag at the North Inch looks like it’s been told off.

  3. Perfect day for a bonfire. Which is exactly why you’ll get one next door the minute your sheets go out.
