Saints and United Draw 1-1, Finish Level on 12 Points; Tayside Declares Uneasy Ceasefire Along the A90

Fans of both clubs 'forced to be polite to each other' until at least the next fixture.

PERTH — Saturday’s 1-1 draw between St Johnstone and Dundee United at McDiarmid Park, which left the two sides locked together on 12 points in the top half of the Premiership, has plunged Tayside into a state of deep and unfamiliar diplomatic calm.

“It’s horrible,” said lifelong Saints supporter Jim Doig, 68, sharing a flask of tea with a United fan outside the ground. “If we’d won, I could gloat. If we’d lost, I could sulk. Now I’ve got to be civil to this man for at least a fortnight. I’ve already complimented his scarf. I feel sick.”

Saints led at the break through the league’s top scorer before a 79th-minute United equaliser, a sequence of events experts described as “the most balanced thing to happen between Perth and Dundee since the invention of the A90.”

Officials from both cities have moved quickly to formalise the truce. A temporary demilitarised zone has been established at the Inchture junction, where fans of both clubs may meet “to exchange pleasantries, pies and grudging respect” under the supervision of a neutral steward from Forfar.

Not everyone has welcomed the peace. “Some of us have spent forty years building up a healthy resentment,” said one United supporter. “You don’t just put that down because of a point. I’ve got grandchildren. What am I supposed to teach them now? Fairness?”

The draw also leaves Perth with an unfamiliar problem. “Twelve points in October,” said Doig quietly. “Top half. I keep checking the table to see if it’s been printed upside down. My wife’s had to hide the Courier so I’ll eat my dinner.”

Psychologists warn the ceasefire is fragile. “Tayside football rivalries are like a pan of soup,” said one. “It looks calm on top. But underneath it’s been on the heat since 1909, and someone’s always about to burn their mouth.”
