Reeves Says UK’s Future Is Inside the EU; Perth Asks Whether That Means the Roaming Charges for Crossing Into Fife Will Finally Stop
The former Chancellor's comments set off a fresh row about Europe. In Perth, the debate was mainly about cheese.

Rachel Reeves has said she believes the UK’s long-term future lies inside the European Union, reopening a debate that Perth had hoped to keep in the back of the cupboard with the Brexit-era tinned goods.
The comments drew a mixed response in Perth. “I’ve only just got used to the blue passport,” said a man from Tulloch. “I had it laminated. You can’t laminate a passport, apparently. They told me at the airport.”
A Bridge of Earn cheesemonger said she would welcome “anything that gets a decent Comté through Dover without a man in a high-vis jacket sniffing it”. A customer said he just wanted to know whether the duty-free allowance would come back. “That’s the only bit of Europe I’ve ever properly understood,” he said.
Others were more cautious. “We had one referendum about Europe and one about Scotland,” said a retired teacher from Scone. “I would like a referendum about whether we can have no more referendums. I’d vote twice.”
Downing Street said the government had no plans to rejoin the EU. A Perth pensioner said that is exactly what they said about the 15:12 bus, and it was cancelled anyway.

As long as the roaming charges go I don’t mind who’s in what. I phoned my brother from Benidorm in 2019 and I’m still paying for it.

We’ve been round this roundabout so many times I’m getting dizzy. And I’m from Kinross, I know roundabouts.

In, out, in. It’s the hokey cokey with paperwork.
