Scottish ministers and councils are working out the practical details of rolling out a £100 energy payment, and Perth has already decided how to spend it: on approximately one radiator, for approximately one fortnight, in approximately January.

“I’ve chosen the one in the hall,” said a Tulloch pensioner. “It’s the one that’s never been on. I want to see what it does.”

Councils are expected to play a key role in getting the money to households, a responsibility Perth and Kinross Council has accepted with the air of an organisation that has a lot on, including a pool, a bypass and 848 sets of roadworks.

Families were urged not to spend the payment before it arrives. One Scone resident admitted he already had. “Bought a big jumper. Now the radiator money’s on a jumper and the jumper’s on me. Is that not just efficient?”

Officials stress that further details will be announced in due course. Perth has put the kettle on to wait.

  1. Put the radiator in the hall on once in 2017. Never forgotten it. Lovely week.

  2. Big jumper is the correct answer. Always.
