Perth Demands Referendum on Clocks Going Back, Insists Extra Hour Be Spent ‘Somewhere Drier’

Residents of Kinross propose keeping the extra hour for 'a lie-in, but outdoors, in Spain'.

PERTH — With British clocks due to go back an hour this weekend, Perth residents have called for a binding referendum on whether they should be allowed to spend the extra hour somewhere warmer.

“It’s always given to us in October,” said a Blairgowrie man. “What use is an hour in October in Perthshire? It’s just one more hour of it being dark at four and raining. Give it to us in July. Or give it to someone in Málaga and let us visit.”

Campaigners have proposed three options: keeping the hour; giving it back; or “saving it in a jar for later, like a Christmas tin of shortbread.”

The Scottish Government said it had no plans to devolve time, but some councillors are said to privately favour Perth being ‘roughly an hour behind everywhere else’, which it already is.
