Perth Christmas Fireworks Moved to North Inch and Cut to 3.5 Minutes; Residents Begin Training to Blink Less
Council confirms display will be 'brief but meaningful, like a Perth summer'.

A family practises not blinking ahead of the 21 November display.
PERTH — Perth’s Christmas Lights Switch-on fireworks will this year launch from the North Inch and last exactly three and a half minutes, prompting residents to begin an intensive programme of training to make sure they actually see them.
“Three and a half minutes is plenty if you’re prepared,” said Perth Fireworks Readiness Coordinator Moira Kennedy, 53, leading a session of 40 residents in a church hall. “But if you check your phone, if you turn to say ‘ooh’ to your neighbour, if you sneeze, you’ve missed a third of it. So we’re working on blinking, peripheral vision and keeping our ‘ooh’ to under a second.”
The display will take place on Saturday 21 November immediately after the lights switch-on, creating a backdrop for the relocated main stage on Tay Street, beside the Royal George Hotel.
Council organisers stressed the move was about crowd management. “Some people asked why it’s three and a half minutes,” said an events spokesperson. “And we said: have you ever stood on Tay Street in November? Three and a half minutes is roughly how long a human body can last.”
The weekend also features a Sunday Christmas Parade, a Bakers Parade as part of CakeFest, a Nativity and Lantern Parade and, for the first time, a drone show. “The drones will be up for longer than the fireworks,” said the spokesperson. “Mainly because they don’t run out. They just go to Dundee.”
Locals have greeted the plans with Perth’s trademark enthusiasm. “Three and a half minutes?” said Bridgend resident Stuart Ogilvie, 62. “That’s longer than St Johnstone’s attacking spells. I’ll take it.”
Organisers have urged attendees to arrive early, wrap up warm, and remember that last year a man went to buy a hot chocolate during the fireworks and “came back to find it was Easter.”
