When Derek Shand, 58, a joiner from Kinross, heard that people were making money from cryptocurrency, he decided to invest in something he understood.

“My nephew kept going on about Bitcoin,” he said. “I said, I don’t know what that is. He said, ‘Uncle Derek, you can invest in anything these days.’ So I invested in tablet. My sister makes it. I bought a tray. I called it TabletCoin.”

At the time, Derek paid £8 for a tray of his sister’s tablet, which she sells at the church fair. He says it is the best investment he has ever made.

“My nephew’s crypto has gone up and down like a yo-yo,” he said. “My TabletCoin went down, but it went down very nicely, with a cup of tea, over about three days. And I enjoyed every bit of it. You can’t say that about Bitcoin.”

Derek has since built up what he calls “a balanced portfolio”. “I’ve got tablet, I’ve got some macaroon bars and I’ve got a tin of shortbread for the long term,” he said. “Diversification. That’s what the experts say.”

His nephew has asked whether Derek would like to put some money into a new digital currency. “I said to him, can you eat it?” said Derek. “He said no. I said, well, there you go then,” he said.

  3. Did he get a receipt? Tablet should always come with a receipt.
