Graham Mackie, 58, has been going down the flumes at Perth Leisure Pool since it opened, and estimates he has done it “more than 4,000 times, give or take a Christmas”.

Known to staff as “Splash”, Graham keeps a laminated card in his swimming bag with his best times for each flume. “I’ve got the record on the twisty one. I did it in 1998. I’ve had a bad hip since, so I’m not chasing it.”

Graham says he doesn’t mind whether the new pool goes on Thimblerow or Glover Street. “Put it on the moon if you like. As long as there’s a flume. If there’s no flume, I’m marching. With my towel.”

His wife, Elaine, says she has never been down a flume. “Somebody has to hold the bags. That’s been my role for thirty years. I’m very good at it.”
