Good News: Falkirk Beat Celtic After 19 Years, Proving That Every Underdog Has Its Day, Including the Perth Pub Quiz Team That Always Comes Fourth
Long waits can end. Perth's perennial runners-up say they have taken heart.

Falkirk’s first win over Celtic in 19 years has been hailed as a victory for underdogs everywhere, and Perth’s underdogs have taken note.
At a city centre pub quiz, a team called “Quizteama Aguilera” has come fourth every Thursday since 2016. “We’ve never won it,” said the team captain, a librarian from Bridgend. “We’ve never been last, either. We’re just fourth. It’s like it’s written in the stars. But if Falkirk can beat Celtic, we can beat the team of retired teachers who sit by the fireplace.”
A Perth bowling club team that has lost every final since 2008 said the result had “lifted the whole clubhouse”. “We put the result up on the noticeboard,” said the club secretary. “Right next to our fixture list. We want the lads to see it every time they make a cup of tea.”
Sports scientists say that self-belief is important and that underdogs can win if they keep at it. The Perthetic says that self-belief is important, and so is the other team having an off day.
We congratulate Falkirk and wish the pub quiz team the best of luck on Thursday. The capital of Australia, by the way, is Canberra. Not Perth. We’ve had to tell them every week.

Our quiz team came fourth again on Thursday. But we’re feeling it now. Third by Christmas.

Every underdog has its day. Mine’s been a Monday so far. Just the Monday.
