A9 at Luncarty to Have No White Lines During the Day Until the Painters Come Back at Night; Drivers Asked to ‘Use Your Imagination and Stay Left’

Overnight road marking works on the southbound dual carriageway start on Tuesday at 7pm and run until 6am on Thursday, with a convoy and the on-slip closed.

BEAR Scotland will be painting new road markings on the A9 at the north end of Luncarty, following resurfacing, from 7pm on Tuesday 3 November until 6am on Thursday 5 November.

The work will be done overnight, with temporary traffic lights and a convoy on the southbound carriageway. The southbound on-slip will be closed, with a diversion via the B8063 and the A9 adding around 4.5 miles and six minutes. The road will be open as normal during the day, but speed restrictions will stay in place because there will be no road markings.

A road with no white lines is a new experience for some Perth drivers.

“No lines?” said a Stanley man. “How will I know where to drive? I’ve followed those lines since 1978. They’re like old friends. I’ll be lost. I’ll probably end up in Bankfoot.”

A driving instructor from Perth said the empty road surface was “a great test of character”. “Some drivers will instinctively stay in their lane,” she said. “Others will drift gently into the middle, like a balloon. You’ll see who’s been relying on the paint.”

A Luncarty woman said the new black tarmac looked “so smooth and lovely that it seems a shame to paint on it”. “It’s like a new blackboard,” she said. “Just leave it for a week. Let us enjoy it.”

BEAR Scotland says the works are the final stage of the resurfacing project. The Perthetic advises southbound drivers to slow down, follow the convoy and, if in doubt, picture the lines in their heads.

Letters to the Editor

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. No lines? That’s just the A9 as we’ve always driven it.

    — Graeme K., Luncarty, 2 November 2026
  2. Stay left and follow the convoy. Same advice I give my husband for most of life.

    — Susan M., Stanley, 2 November 2026
  3. I’ll be on it at 3am heading to the airport. I’ll wave at the painters. They’ll not see me. It’s dark.
