The Met Office says dry and bright. A Perth DIY store reports brisk sales of de-icer, grit and blind optimism.

Monday will be bright, with sunny intervals and a high of around 12°C, after a frosty start. It will be the sort of day, forecasters say, when you need sunglasses at 9am and gloves at 5pm.

That has not stopped a Perth DIY store reporting “a rush on grit”. “It’s the frost,” said a member of staff. “One frost, and they all remember the winter of 2010. They buy grit for a path they haven’t swept since.”

A Tulloch man left with two bags of grit and a snow shovel. “The forecast says sunny,” he said. “The forecast said sunny in 2010 too. Well, it didn’t. But it might have. I’m not taking any chances.”

Forecasters say there is no snow in sight for Perth this week, but advise drivers to watch out for icy patches early in the morning, especially on untreated side roads.

The man from Tulloch says he will keep the grit “for next year, or the year after”. He has twelve bags in the garage from previous years.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. Better safe than sorry. I’ve two bags of grit and a shovel by the door, and it’s 12 degrees. I’m ready.

  2. What’s a sunny interval? Is it like a half-time at the football?
