Perth’s Halloween forecast is the best in years: sunny spells, a top of 14°C, light winds and dry weather until the evening, with a 40 per cent chance of rain arriving at about 9pm.

“That’s perfect,” said a mum from Letham, who will be taking three small skeletons round the doors. “We’ll be out from six until half eight, then home, wet wipes, bath, bed. The rain can come at nine. I’ll be on the couch.”

Weather watchers say the rain is very well timed. “Nine o’clock is when sensible guisers are home,” said one. “Anyone still out at nine is either a teenager or a dad who went back for the sweets that fell out of the bag.”

Gusts should be no more than about 17mph, which costume experts say is “safe for witches’ hats but not for capes made of bin bags”.

Sunset is at 4.34pm, so the darkness will arrive in plenty of time for the spooky stuff. The Met Office says the rain will be patchy and clear later. The neep lanterns will be fine.
