Global oil prices fell this week, and Perthshire drivers responded by standing beside petrol pumps watching the price display, in the manner of people waiting for a kettle that will boil “eventually”.

“When it goes up, it goes up that afternoon,” said a Crieff motorist. “When it goes down, it has to fill in a form. Then it goes to committee. Then it comes back in spring as a penny.”

Economists explained that pump prices depend on many factors, including wholesale costs, the pound, refining margins and “the general mood of the universe”.

Perth’s taxi drivers welcomed any fall, however small, and said it would be “put to good use idling at the Dundee Road lights until Monday”.
