LETHAM — Fictional retiree Doreen McFie has recorded every gust since 1998 on a device made of yoghurt pots and a knitting needle. “It’s broken six times,” she says. “Each time I knew it was a big one.”

Her readings are emailed nightly to the Met Office, who have never replied, “out of professional jealousy”.

The real story: Fictional.
