Every working day, I drive the A90 to Dundee through four weeks of contraflow. I endure the cones. I endure the Dundonian driving. And then, at lunch, I endure the hardest truth of all.

Their pies are better.

There. I’ve said it in writing, which is different to saying it out loud. If anyone asks, I’ll deny it. If anyone from Perth reads this, I was hacked.

I’m not saying Perth pies are bad. They are fine. Respectable. They have good manners. But a Dundee peh grabs you by the collar. It’s a peh with stories.

Fiona Cairncross is a columnist and will be moving house shortly.
