PERTH — The first official census of traffic cones in Perth has found the city is now home to around 140,000 cones, roughly three for every resident, with the population growing fastest in the North Inch and along any road someone was hoping to use.
Census-takers said many cones were found living alone at the side of roads with no visible roadworks, “having been left there in 2022 and just sort of settling in”.
“They’re a quiet community,” said a census volunteer. “Very stable. Some of them haven’t moved in years. One on Crieff Road has a family of snails living in it.”
Cones have demanded better representation, including a dedicated lane on every road. Officials pointed out they already have that. “That’s the point,” said the volunteer. “That’s literally all the lanes.”

No letters yet. The town is uncharacteristically quiet.
