PERTH — The US President’s plan to close a historic public golf course in Washington for about 15 months of renovations, after calling it old, broken and dilapidated, has worried Perthshire golf clubs, many of which fit that description lovingly.

“Old? Broken? Dilapidated? That’s our clubhouse,” said one club secretary. “Our bar last saw a paintbrush in 1987. If he comes over here, we’re done for.”

The plan comes amid a court fight over tree removal in the park. Perthshire golfers sympathised. “We’ve got trees on the twelfth that have been eating balls since the war,” said one. “Nobody’s allowed to touch them either.”

One club has put up a sign reading “Members Only. Especially Him.”
