The BANK OF SCOTLAND, Crieff (Formerly): Reborn as a Charity Shop, in What Experts Call ‘the Circle of High Street Life’

Building that once held the town's savings will now sell its second-hand jigsaws, which is basically the same thing.

CRIEFF — The former Bank of Scotland premises in Crieff are to be reborn as a charity shop, in what heritage experts call “the natural life cycle of the Scottish high street: bank, empty, charity shop, and back to bank in about 2070.”

In its first life the building held mortgages, overdrafts and earnest talks about ISAs. In its next it will hold fondue sets, Agatha Christie paperbacks and a wedding dress worn once in 1987 “by someone who looked very happy.”

“I never went into the bank,” said one resident. “All forms and no biscuits. Now it’ll be bargains and a wee bowl of sweeties at the till. That’s progress.”

The old vault is thought ideal for storing donated jigsaws, of which every charity shop in Scotland holds about a thousand, each missing exactly one piece.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

No letters yet. The town is uncharacteristically quiet.
