The AUCHTERARDER HIGH STREET BUTCHER (Departed September 2026): Remembered for Its Sausages, Its Pies and Its Patient Explanations of Haggis

Town adjusting to a High Street where nobody asks 'and what else?' in that particular tone.

AUCHTERARDER — The town’s well-known High Street butcher closed its doors in September, and the Lang Toun is still in mourning.

It was a shop of great warmth and cold counters, with sausages so good people came down the hill in their golf shoes. Regulars recall the rows of pies, black pudding on a Saturday, and staff who explained to tourists what haggis actually was “without making them feel bad.”

It brought joy to the barbecues of Strathearn, salvation to many a Christmas dinner and, once, a large bone to a dog who had not been invited.

In lieu of flowers, customers are asked to observe a minute’s silence at their next barbecue, followed by the traditional burning of the first sausage.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

No letters yet. The town is uncharacteristically quiet.
