Council Scraps May Day Holiday and End-of-Term Early Finishes; Parents and Pupils Unite for First Time in History
New February break welcomed, but losing the Christmas half-day 'an attack on the Scottish way of life'.

PERTH — Perth and Kinross Council’s decision to give pupils a February holiday in 2028 while scrapping the May Day holiday and the lunchtime finishes before Christmas and summer has achieved what no previous policy managed: parents and pupils agree.
“The last day before Christmas, you get out at lunchtime. That’s the law,” said a Primary 7 pupil. “It’s in the Bible. Or Braveheart. One of them.”
“For once, I’m with the weans,” said a Scone father. “That half-day is sacred. Selection box before 2pm, asleep in front of Elf by four. Now they’ll be in until quarter past three doing a word search about tinsel.”
The February break has gone down better. “February’s the worst month,” said one teacher. “A week off makes it survivable. Mind you, that was also true of May Day.” Pupils have started a petition. Parents will sign it “right after the selection box.”
