Twinning is about friendship and exchange. Aberfeldy's school pupils, bakers and pipers have a lot to share.

Whatever people think of the details, a twinning arrangement between Aberfeldy and Salado in Texas means new friendships, new visitors and new stories for both places.

Salado holds its own Highland Games, with pipe bands, clans and a very real love of all things Scottish. Aberfeldy is all things Scottish. It’s a natural fit.

Ideas for exchanges are already being imagined. Pupils could become pen pals. Pipe bands could swap tunes. Bakers could exchange recipes, so that Texas can at last be shown how to make a proper fruit scone, and Aberfeldy can be shown how to make a barbecue that works in the rain.

“I think it’s lovely,” said a Kenmore woman. “There are people in Texas who have never been to Scotland, but they love it. They wear kilts. They do the dancing. Somebody should go over and tell them they’re doing a grand job.”

Twinning has a long, happy history in Scotland. Towns have made lifelong friends, swapped football teams for the weekend and discovered that, deep down, everybody everywhere complains about the roads.

The Perthetic wishes Aberfeldy and Salado a long and friendly partnership, and hopes that somebody remembers to pack a scone.

Letters to the Editor

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. A Texan biscuit is a scone, a Texan scone is a cake, and a Texan cake is a building. We’ll sort them out.

    — Agnes W., Aberfeldy, 2 November 2026
  2. Jam first. That’s the only rule. Write it in the letter.

    — Moira F., Grandtully, 2 November 2026
  3. I’ve already got a pen pal. She’s from Salado. She asked what tablet is. I sent her some. She’s not answered since. Too busy chewing.
