Ewan McGregor Says His Favourite Motorbike Ride Ends at His Mum and Dad’s House in Crieff; Every Perthshire Son Over 40 Nods Solemnly

The actor, who has ridden round the world, says the best road of all is the one that finishes with a cup of tea in Crieff. Perthshire mothers have forwarded the article to their sons with no comment.

Ewan McGregor has ridden motorbikes across Mongolia, Siberia, Africa and the Americas. Asked about his favourite ride, the Crieff-born actor picked something closer to home: a run through the Highlands that finishes at his parents’ house in Crieff, with a cup of tea.

Perthshire has taken this very personally.

“There you are,” said a Crieff mother of three, holding up her phone. “A man who’s been round the world twice, says the best bit is going home to see his mum. I’ve sent that to all three of mine. Only one of them’s replied. He sent a thumbs up. A thumbs up.”

A Comrie woman said it was the nicest thing she had heard all year. “Star Wars, Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, and the highlight is a cup of tea in Crieff,” she said. “That’s the right answer. That’s how you know he was brought up properly.”

Bikers have started planning their own versions of the route. One from Methven said he would be doing the same ride this weekend, through Glencoe, round Loch Earn and down to Crieff. “My mum’s in Crieff as well,” he said. “She doesn’t know I’m coming. She’ll be thrilled. Then she’ll tell me to take my boots off.”

The Perthetic contacted several Crieff tearooms, which confirmed that a motorcyclist in leathers asking for “just a cup of tea, please” was “an everyday occurrence” and that “most of them say they’re going to their mum’s after”.

Mothers across Strathearn are understood to have put the kettle on this morning, just in case.

Letters to the Editor

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. Same as me, except my ride is the 15 bus and my mum makes me take my shoes off.

    — Jim S., Comrie, 2 November 2026
  2. Every mother in Strathearn read this and immediately texted her son the word ‘well?’

    — Carol A., Crieff, 2 November 2026
  3. Lovely story. The Sma’ Glen on a bike is magic. On a tractor behind a bike, less so.

    — Hamish N., Gilmerton, 2 November 2026
