A Perthshire town hall has been sold for £1, and locals are celebrating the community taking charge of a building full of memories.

“It’s the best pound I’ve ever spent,” said a volunteer who helped with the paperwork. “It’s taken five years, three meetings a month and a lot of biscuits. The actual pound took about two seconds. I had it in my pocket.”

Residents say the hall has hosted generations of dances, discos, jumble sales and rural-run meetings, and is already being lined up for ceilidhs and community events.

Local tradesmen have offered to help with repairs. “The roof needs work, the heating needs work and the toilets need a minister,” said one. “But it’s ours now. We’ll fix it.”

The pound has been framed and will be hung in the entrance hall. Nobody is allowed to spend it, though one child has already asked.

  1. Best pound I’ve ever seen spent. And I once got two fish suppers for a fiver.

  2. The toilets do need a minister. Possibly two.
