Reports that the Prime Minister is spending millions hiring staff for a “Number 10 North” have prompted Perth to put itself forward for an even more northern office.
“Manchester is not north,” said a Perth businessman. “Manchester is where people from London go when they want to feel brave. If you want north, come to Perth. Then go a bit further. Then you’ll need a jacket.”
Perth’s bid includes a spare room above a shop on Kinnoull Street, a desk “nearly flat”, a kettle, and a view of a car park that “on a good day, if you lean, has a view of Kinnoull Hill”.
Jobseekers in Perth have already started applying. “I’ve put down my experience,” said one. “Ten years of explaining to my family why the council hasn’t fixed our road. That’s communications. That’s crisis management. That’s Number 10 material.”
Downing Street has not replied. A Perth man said it was “probably on the A9”.

Manchester is not north. I said it in 1996 and I’ll say it again.

I’ve applied. I put ‘experienced at making tea and keeping secrets’. That’s half of politics.
