Eck Fleming, a 66-year-old retired postman from Blairgowrie, has set himself a challenge: to visit every one of Perth and Kinross’s 848 active roadworks before they finish.

“I’ve done 312 so far,” said Eck, showing the Perthetic a road atlas covered in red stickers. “It’s like Munro-bagging, but flatter. And there are more of them.”

Eck takes a photo at each site and makes notes on the quality of the cones, the patience of the traffic lights, and whether there is “anybody actually working”. He says the answer to the last question is “yes, more often than you’d think”.

His wife, Senga, supports the hobby “as long as he’s out of the house”. The problem, she says, is that new roadworks keep appearing. “He’ll never finish. Which is fine. It’s like painting the Forth Bridge, but he gets to sit in the car.”

The real story: Perth and Kinross Council roadworks

  1. He’s out right now. Lovely. Peace and quiet.
