Pitlochry Town Hall is to be handed to the community for £1, after 185 of 193 consultation responses backed the transfer to a local charity — a level of agreement not seen in Highland Perthshire since everyone agreed the A9 was “a bit much”.

The news sent shockwaves through the region’s estate agents, several of whom were found lying down in darkened rooms muttering “but the period features”.

“At £1 you are basically paying for the key,” said a Perth agent who asked not to be named in case his own commission is now measured in pennies. “I’ve sold garden sheds for more. I’ve sold a single gatepost for more. Once.”

In Pitlochry, shoppers checked the backs of sofas in the hope of a second town hall coming up. A tearoom offered to “match the price” for a scone, then withdrew the offer at 10.14am.

The community group taking on the hall has ambitious plans. The Perthetic would like to place on record that this is a lovely result, and that the eight people who didn’t respond in favour are now presumably drafting a letter about the parking.

The views expressed are those of the reader, and frankly that's on them.

  1. A pound? I’ve paid more for a parking ticket outside it.

  2. Good on them. Community ownership is the best thing to happen to that hall since the ceilidh of ’94.

    — Fiona M., Pitlochry, 29 October 2026
  3. Can I have one for 50p if I bring my own chairs?
