KINROSS — Bargain Bonanza, the beloved pound shop on Kinross High Street, has died peacefully after a long illness known to doctors as "inflation". It was 15.
Born in 2011 in a former shoe shop, Bargain Bonanza quickly became a local institution. It sold everything: party hats, baking trays, dog toys, AA batteries, Christmas tinsel in July and, for one remarkable fortnight in 2016, an entire crate of Polish pickled beetroot that nobody had ordered and nobody could explain.
"It was the only shop where you went in for a lightbulb and came out with a foot spa, a set of mini whisks and a garden gnome dressed as a fisherman," said former regular Linda Steele, 62. "I didn't need any of it. But it was a pound. You'd be a fool not to."
In its later years, the shop struggled. Prices rose first to £1.25, then to £1.50, and finally, in a move that shocked the community, to "£1.75 or two for £3.40". Friends say this was the beginning of the end. "It lost its identity," said one. "You can't be called a pound shop and charge £1.75. That's just a shop."
The shop is survived by four vape shops, two charity shops, a phone repair place, a nail bar, and a temporary pop-up selling candles that smell of "Scottish Rain". It was predeceased by a Woolworths, a Blockbuster and a small shop that sold only buttons, which locals still speak of in hushed tones.
A memorial service will be held outside the empty unit on Saturday at 11am. Mourners are asked not to bring flowers, but instead to bring one thing they bought there and never used. Organisers expect "tens of thousands of items, mainly novelty egg cups."
In lieu of donations, the family asks that you simply walk past the empty window, pause, and remember a time when you could buy a mop, a lasagne dish and a three-pack of tea towels for £3 and still have change for a Freddo.
